Just finished watching an excellent CBC The Fifth Estate episode on ‘The Switch from Hell’ about the GM cover-up of their faulty ignition switch which would go from the ‘run’ to ‘accessory’ position thus causing loss of all power functions including power steering, power brakes and worst… air bag deployment. The situation caused the deaths of dozens of GM drivers of Pontiac Pursuit, Chevy Cobalt and Saturn Ion vehicles from the early to mid-2000 model years. Several Canadian victims were involved.

All of it seems to have revealed a culture of profit over even the most basic corporate (and human) responsibility … showing how GM even put a price ($200,000 per victim death for settlement) made a recall economically unviable and had them seemingly hide the defect while secretly replacing the spring-loaded ‘detent plunger’ which was too short in the faulty vehicles to a longer, more secure one… yet never doing a recall, and overtly denying any sort of knowledge of the defect not just to the media, but under oath in front of Washington political interrogation.

So… doesn’t make me want to even reconsider ever buying a GM (or GM family including Chevrolet etc.) vehicle ever again nor recommending one to any one close to me.
